88 minutes

First ARTE broadcast: March 2014

A coproduction of Syria, Germany, Sweden

"Return to Homs" tells the story of young activists from Homs, who are protesting against Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Their initially peaceful demonstrations are brutally suppressed by the regime's troops. For this reason, in the spring of 2011, they decided to take up arms and fight for their freedom. What follows is a bloody struggle that continues until this very day.

Baset, the 19-year-old football star, along with the other rebels, recorded with their small video cameras the next two years of what turned into a civil war.

"Return to Homs" is a coproduction of Proaction-Film (Syria) and Ventana-Film (Germany) together with Südwestrundfunk, ARTE, and Swedish television SVT. Other television stations involved are Swiss television RTS, Japanese broadcaster NHK and Radio Canada.

This critically acclaimed film was premiered in November 2013 for the opening of The International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA).

The North American premiere of "Return to Homs" took place in mid-January 2014 at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. It won the Grand Jury Prize for the Best International Documentary.
