„Over the Limit“

A performance in Rhythmic Gymnastics lasts around one and a half minutes. Athletes start at preschool age, training for over thirty hours a week. And rigorously. Why? To attain a perfect 90 second routine of elegance, buoyancy and grace refined with a perfect smile. "Over the Limit" is an intimate portrait of Margarita Mamun, a 19-year-old Russian world champion, who is among the top-ranked performers and part of the most successful team in the world. Her biggest competitor is her best friend and her trainer is Irina Viner, an icon of rhythmic gymnastics and wife of one of the richest men in the world, Gazprom-Oligarch Alisher Usmanov. Though Margarita crowned her career with the gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, she turns her back on the competitive sport and starts a new life.

Polish filmmaker Marta Prus accompanied Margarita Mamun during the year of 2016. In her documentary, she captures the inner world of teenagers and high-performance athletes who have been shut out from the outside world.

A co-production of Ventana-Film and Telemark Warsaw with ARTE G.E.I.E., YLE and the Polish Film Institute.
