"POLAND IS NOT YET LOST"

A VENTANA FILM BY CLAUS RICHTER / ARTE SHOWING TIMES: TUESDAY, NOV. 15 TH 2016 at 9:50 pm / TUESDAY, DEC. 6 TH 2016 at 1:15 am (55 MIN).

Claus Richter captures the current political and social development in Poland with a critical eye since the national conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) took over. Within the last year, the Party’s leader, Yaroslav Kaczynski, has disempowered the constitutional court, designated a state run judiciary and nationalized the media. The country is divided as never before.

On the one hand, the liberal minded of Poland and Europe are worried for the future of a young democracy. Many feel reminded of the communist times. Those who criticize the policy of the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) are officially considered as traitors. Hundreds of thousands have gone to the streets in the past months to defend a hard won freedom.

On the other hand, Jaroslav Kaczynski, and his PiS party, is mobilizing the conservative, rural, poorer Poland, while relying on the support of the Catholic Church. His goal is a new Polish republic that turns away from Europe and Germany to create a nation-state with socialist features. He is attempting to rewrite history since the fall of the Wall in 89/90.

However, critics remain hopeful. Kaczynski and his neo-conservative government would one day realize that a go-it-alone nation in the EU is already doomed for economic reasons. In this respect, the initial words of the Polish national anthem remain true to this day: "Poland is not yet lost".

A Ventana-Film production for ZDF and ARTE.
