GENERATION JIHAD

A VENTANA FILM BY ALBERT KNECHTEL AND PIERRE-OLIVIER FRANÇOIS / ARTE-SHOWING TIMES: TUESDAY, JUNE 28TH 2016 at 9:10 PM AND SUNDAY, JULY 17TH 2016 at 4:00 AM (52 MIN).

Fear of terrorism is reaching Europe. The attacks in Paris and Brussels have alarmed many with the possibility of an attack happening anytime and anywhere. A large network of young, predominantly European-born radicalized Islamists is growing. What can governments in Europe do to stop the war from being seductive for young people?

ISIS terrorist attacks have profoundly changed our society.

Uncertainty and fear is spreading. The critical question, however, is how to deal with those who are being radicalized before going into war and returning. After the last attack in France, the same measures all around the continent are being enforced for the returnees; prosecution and imprisonment. Initiatives devoted to protecting young people from radicalization receive little support from the state. "Law and Order" is the motto. Are there other ways to effectively confront the issue of jihadist extremism and to tackle it at its roots?

"Generation Jihad" examines these alternative strategies for the so-called de-radicalization and prevention in Europe. The filmmakers Albert Knechtel and Pierre-Olivier François focus on initiatives in Germany, France, Belgium, and Great Britain. For example, in Germany the initiative Violence Prevention Network in Hessen is committed to this challenge. Is it possible to develop common strategies in all member states of Europe that aim to protect the youth from radicalizing instead of aiming to fight against terrorism? Most importantly, it is a key task for civil society.
